Week in Review: Nov 19th - 23rd by Rosie & Alisha!

Monday
In Maths we were looking at adding and subtracting.

Tuesday
Today we began looking at our new class book, Tutankhuman. Tutankhuman was an Egyptian boy-king that was buried in a tomb.  Howard Carter has spent 5 years searching for it!

Wednesday
In English we were writing ancient Egyptian facts and had to create their family tree!

Thursday
In Maths, Year 3 were working on 4 & 8 times tables, while Year 4 were tackling the 6, 7 and 9 times tables.  We also had a little mental maths quiz about lots of maths topics.  Some of us found the questions about the calendar a bit tricky.  So we will be looking at this a bit more closely.
We also began making some Christmas decorations for the corridor ahead of the Christmas Fair next Friday!  We are working in small groups to make Santa's team of reindeer!
WE GOT OUR PEN PALS LETTERS FROM CANADA TODAY!

Friday
This morning we were taught by Miss Wones!  Mrs. Pell and lots of other teachers were away learning cool new ways to teach us Maths!  Miss Wones had to give us our first Headstart Spelling Test!
Mrs. Pell was back after lunch, so in Spanish we did some more Spanish ER Verb work and we began learning a new Spanish song called A Pasear.  Finally, we had News & Sunshine time with Mr. Hall.

Our Canadian Pen Pal Letters Arrived!

It was a magical moment in Cheetahs class this morning as the children received their Pen Pal letters from their friends in West Kelowna, BC, Canada!  There were smiles and squeals of excitement as they poured over the impeccably written letters and share the art work and photos of their new friend with classmates.

Our lovely TAs Ms Ryan and Mrs Barker worked very hard to get all of the letters photocopied so that 1) the Cheetahs could take their prized letters home, and 2) we have a copy at school so that the children can answer the many, many questions the Canadians have asked them about their lives and what it's like at our school as well as living in England!

I am very happy to have the Cheetahs include any local post cards, drawings, small tokens (eg. stickers or friendship bracelets) should they wish to send their new friend a little something along with their next letter.  Anytime an idea strikes them, please feel free to have them bring it in and I'll keep it safe.

We will begin writing our replies next week with a view to mailing them as we break up for Christmas!

I'm quite sure I will hear from my niece when they have received our letters, so I'll keep you... posted! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

-Mrs. Pell

Week in Review Nov 5th-9th by Boyd & Isaac!

Monday:
-We went to How Hill for our Federation Day!  Our favourite activity was dyke dipping in the pond!  We did so many activities.

Tuesday:
-We did some real Egyptian work on papyrus paper!  We did our rough copies in our books first.

Wednesday:
-We imagine that we were WWI soldiers and wrote letters home to our loved ones.  We did this in honour of Remembrance Day coming up and how this year marks 100 years since the end of WWI!
-In assembly we have been learning a song about why we wear poppies at this time of year.  It is a catchy tune! We hope you enjoyed hearing us sing it at the parent's assembly on Friday!

Thursday:
-Mrs. Pell's joke of the day was:  "What do you call a number that can't sit still?  A roamin' numeral!"
-In Maths we were very good at estimating calculations by using our rounding skills!
-Our new Headstart Spelling program is really fun!  We had a spelling race today where we raced against ourselves to get personal-best scores!

Friday:
-This morning we mixed with Panthers Class (Year 3&6 worked together and Year 4&5 worked together) on some activities for Remembrance day.  We made 3D poppies using recycled plastic bottles & acrylic paint in one session, and we worked together on a 2D poppy collage in the other session.
-We also listened to a story together called A Poppy is to Remember, by H. Patterson & R. Lightburn. We learned that John McCrae, the poet that wrote In Flanders Fields, happens to have been Canadian, but back then, Canadians served in War for Britain.  His poem was so inspiring at the time that it was published in England, used to promote war effort fund-raising in Canada and in the USA, a woman was so inspired by the poem, that she began the campaign of having injured veterans make poppies for sale to raise money for other injured veterans & their families.  A campaign that has been adopted by many countries and still carries on 100 years later!

First week down!

Our first week back has flown by!  We hit the ground running this week, but ended it with a tasty, yet spooky cake raffle (made by yours truly) & donated to the class by Alisha's family!  Speaking of Alisha, she is currently in the lead with Reading Miles in our class with a whopping 37 miles!  Keep up the great work!  Remember to record what you've read in your homework diaries.  We tally them up every 2 weeks (roughly) and we look forward to awarding prizes!

We have begun our new Spelling program called Headstart Spellings.  This program is a 4 week system of patterns & rules, practice, activities and games.  The children will then be tested on some of the words on the 4th week.  This learning will take place at school and will no longer be a part of their weekly homework!  This program us now being used throughout the school and all students will be working at a level that challenges their abilities.    If you have any questions, do come and speak with us.

We hope you've all had a wonderful week!
